The beautiful Rolhensha (fondly called Rolhy) hails from St. Kitts and Nevis and is quite new to the music scene in the Caribbean. With four releases thus far, she is making quite a name for herself. One of her recent releases featured Jamaican sensation, Gyptian and has been well received in her home country and overseas. Her enthusiasm and bubbly personality is what had Entertainment Macco interested in this Island Princess. Lets hear what Rolhensha had to say!
Entertainment Macco: Who is Rolhensha?
Rolhensha: “I love to sing…I hope to continue to make people hear about me and my music. Personally I am very shy and reserved but when I am on the stage I am a totally different person who is just full of energy. I just love to try new things and different experiences.”
Entertainment Macco: What is your given name?
Entertainment Macco: Your name is quite interesting, please do share the meaning…
Entertainment Macco: Tell me your Date of birth and your horoscope please :-)
Entertainment Macco: Single/In a Relationship/Married?
Entertainment Macco: At what age did you realize your ability to sing?
Entertainment Macco: Explain to me what the music scene in St. Kitts and Nevis is like, how difficult is it for you as a young female artiste to get recognition?
Entertainment Macco: I maccoed that you have a male manager, is it difficult working with a male manager?
Rolhensha: “It is difficult, I don’t know if it is because he is male of if it is because he is Cheddi (her manager). Males kinda have the tendency to be in command and in control so we have conflict because I like to be in control, but we work through the conflicts, we work well together and we make a very good team.”
Entertainment Macco: How did it all begin for you Rolhy (I hope you do not mind me calling you that)?
Entertainment Macco: Who is Rolhy (pronounced Rully) without her music?
Entertainment Macco: **Tries to sing Just a lil Loving** but I will leave the singing for the professional (you), let me just say that, that song is quite interesting, how did the collaboration come about with Gyptian?
Entertainment Macco: In your island what is the response like to “Just a lil loving” and what is the airplay like?
Entertainment Macco: Why do people see the song as controversial and who are they? Rolhensha: " The Christian community feels like it is promoting promiscuity and I grew up in the church and still am active church member."
Entertainment Macco: Use one word to describe your style of music, your genre. I hear a fusion but what do you call it?
Entertainment Macco: Alright! You win...haha
Entertainment Macco: How many songs have you recorded thus far?
Entertainment Macco: If you were given the opportunity to work with one Caribbean Artiste, who would you choose and why?
Entertainment Macco: Who is Rolhensha?
Rolhensha: “Rolhensha Henry”
Rolhensha: “It is not fully defined as yet. My name was given to me by my father; which is a combination of his name, however I am in the process of giving a full meaning to it…”
Rolhensha: “11th of October 1990. That makes me a Libra”
Rolhensha: “Single…”
Rolhensha: “I could have been 16 when I recognized. Now I always sang but I never really thought I had such a special voice until I entered a competition (Kittitian Superstar) just for the money.
Entertainment Macco: When did you decide to pay more attention to your talent and make it into a career?
Rolhensha: “At the same competition; it turned out that I got a lot of love, support and fans. It was then I realized that I loved singing and I didn’t want to stop then or any other time, hence my decision to do music fulltime”
Rolhensha: “It is not really difficult as long as your music is good and people like it. I mostly get opposition from females for some reason. (haha) Once people know you are serious they will support you here in St. Kitts.”
Entertainment Macco: What about gender issues and conflicts as far as decision making is concerned, are there any? If yes how are they dealt with?
Rolhensha: “No gender issues”
Entertainment Macco: I heard about your amazing performance at the St. Kitts Music Festival, how was that experience for you?
Rolhensha: “It was a great experience, I was looking forward to performing for the St. Kitts Music Festival so I put in a lot of work; On my performance and wardrobe etc. Cheddi actually designed half of my outfit; he is my costume/wardrobe designer (haha). The response from the crowd was amazing, they reassured me that what I am doing is really worth the while and that I am not fooling myself when I am singing in the mirror.”
Rolhensha: “No I do not mind you calling me Rolhy (pronounced as Rully). I would say it is combination of a couple of things. It was early in 2008 I think and the first time I met Cheddi when some friends and I did a photo commercial that he was shooting, he asked me if I could write songs, when I responded positively he asked me to write one and send it to him. When I sent the song he liked it and asked me to sing it for him, which I did and again he liked it. His other request at that point in time was for me to do a demo and he was on me about taking singing seriously. He became my manager and the rest is what is happening now.”
Rolhensha: “Music has always been a part of me, before I was an artiste I used to sing in school and in church and I used to play Steelpan. So I was never really away from music. Other than my music I focus on my academics and that’s about it.”
Rolhensha: “You going to have to ask Cheddi about all the details”
Entertainment Macco: Where is Cheddi?
Rolhensha: "Hold a minute……"
Cheddi: “What happened is that I found this dude from Miami who is a close personal friend of Gyptian and in short he basically made the collaboration happen…”
Entertainment Macco: Thank you Cheddi…now back to Rolhensha….Any plans of performing the song with him soon?
Rolhensha: “Yes that will happen soon and we will also be working on the video as well so look out for that.”
Rolhensha: “The airplay is good and the feedback is amazing as well. There is a little bit of controversy however and people assume that loving has to be sexual intercourse, so when anyone asks me about that I have to broaden the horizons for them and explain that what it is for one it does not have to be for the other.”
Entertainment Macco: How does your affiliation to the church affects your music and choices?
Rolhensha: "It does not directly affect them but off course my church affiliation has helped me become the person I am today."Entertainment Macco: Use one word to describe your style of music, your genre. I hear a fusion but what do you call it?
Rolhensha: “Island Soul Pop”
Entertainment Macco: Hi….that is not one word!
Rolhensha: “But it is one genre…haha”
Rolhensha: “I have recorded so many but only ever released four”
Rolhensha: “Definitely Jah Cure because I love the way that in his recorded music you can feel as though he is there, that the emotions are real. I have seen him perform here in St. Kitts and his voice is awesome, also we share the same birth date October 11th and although I had loved him before I love him even more now..”
Entertainment Macco: In the industry what is your biggest pet peeve, that one thing that is sure to annoy you?
Entertainment Macco: I know you are still pretty young (some may think so) but I am pretty sure that there
are a lot of men in your island trying to figure out what they can do to get your attention…so I have to ask, what is your biggest turn on in the opposite sex?
Entertainment Macco: When you are going to look for a mate would you look for someone in or out of the industry?
Entertainment Macco: Alright…back to the music, do you see yourself more as a full-time artiste or is this a side-line gig?
Entertainment Macco: Is there anything you want to say or add to the interview? Anything or anyone you want to make special mention of? Go right ahead Rohly!
"Just A Lil Loving"
Rolhensha: "There is no industry and there are not much opportunities to make much money etc like in Trinidad as far as gigs are concerned etc…In St. Kitts it is like a stepping stone…once people love your music here they are going to help get it outside but it is just that for the while.”
Entertainment Macco: When we take a general look at the music industry in the Caribbean it is quite evident that men are more successful than women, what do you think is the cause of this?
Rolhensha: "Because to me for women more pressure is placed on us in anything we do and it is not like that for a man…if a man does something great he is rated highly but not with a woman… a woman has to do so many changes to satisfy people but it is not like that for the man they are accepted as is."
Entertainment Macco: You are so right!
are a lot of men in your island trying to figure out what they can do to get your attention…so I have to ask, what is your biggest turn on in the opposite sex?
Rolhensha: “Those who are scared to approach me don’t have a chance my biggest turn on is confidence.”
Entertainment Macco: I hear that! Listen to her men!
Rolhensha: “Probably out.”
Entertainment Macco: Why?
Rolhensha: “For somebody who is in the industry it is so time consuming and stressful. I would prefer someone who is experiencing something different so we can share experiences and for the girls who go crazy over artistes I do not want to deal with that either.”
Rolhensha: “Full-time artiste and on the side I have my studies; Management Studies at UWI Open campus here in St. Kitts.”
Entertainment Macco: An education is quite important...it is great that you are pursuing your studies.
Entertainment Macco: What are you complimented about the most?
Rolhensha: “People usually tell me that I am warm and beautiful *giggles*”
Entertainment Macco: I don't disagree with them at all!
Entertainment Macco: What can we expect to see/hear from Rolhy in the near future?
Rolhensha: “You can look for two videos for “Tease” and “Just a lil loving”. Also I will be hosting an event here in St Kitts just focused on me and my career/music.”
Entertainment Macco: Sounds good to me.
Entertainment Macco: So Rohly , I am not sure if you are familiar with the term “Macco”; it’s a Trini slang that basically means that I love to mind other peoples business’, sometimes for no apparent reason (just because it feels right)..LOL. Right! Now that we have the definition out of the way, this is my question to you, how do you plan on keeping your personal life and business life away from the maccos?
Rolhensha: “Hahaha Well personally I don’t bother to study people who mind my business for negativity. I do not really let what people think about me bother me. If it is constructive criticism I will accept that but anything else as far as bringing me down I ignore. Realistically if people want to talk they will talk. My song “Defend it” speaks about those type of situations and it was inspired by my experiences”
Rolhensha: “I just want to encourage everyone to visit my Myspace, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter accounts, Google me, listen to my music. For all the support I have received thus far I really appreciate it. To God, my family and friends, thank you so much, To everyone else Get on the train now before it leaves. **giggles**”
Entertainment Macco: Thank you Rohly!
Rolhensha: "You are very welcome and thank you too"
