A Macco experiences Labor Day

Entertainment Macco experienced their first Labor Day and we have to tell you guys it wasn’t what we expected at all. When you live and experienced Carnival in T&T for so many years it is hard to even consider comparing it to any other carnival especially to Labor Day in New York where only some of the population are west Indian, so who knew what to expect. It was quite an experience that we very much so enjoyed.

Monday 29^th August

We got to JFK Airport that morning, had some food took a rest and our first order of business was Mas camp hopping we wanted to shop around before deciding who we should play with, because we ain’t fly all the way to Brooklyn to not play mas:

First stop Elegance Mas Camp, beautiful costumes, small group but creative with determination. Then it was off to Sesame Flyers, There costumes were again beautiful and very much like what we see in Trinidad.

We visited quite a few mas camps, Borokeets USA, Ramajay, Exotica and we were really impressed and we were almost certain who were going to play mas with, then some close friends suggested we visit KARMA, we were like Nisha B and Ravi B have a mas band? (inserts confused face) but apparently a group of St. Lucians started a mas band 3 years ago and let me tell you, I loved them the minute I stepped into their camp in Brooklyn, the group was so eager to help, answered my million and one questions, they were friendly and offered me refreshments (I is a Trini so free drinks We dey!).

Please note we never identified ourselves to any of the camps we visited as we wanted to get the real deal.

First thing were noticed was how organized they were, like WOW, we have to make notable mention of Claude, who we later learned was the designer of the costumes, the brother knew his stuff and before we left the camp, KARMA carnival band was it, we chose a section called Silver Lining, frontline of course, 1^st time we had to be in the best of everything.

So now that we chose the band..... time to fete.

Tuesday 30^th August

We had dinner at Sugarcane Restaurant on Flatbush, now since we reach we went by the lil take out spots, Ali’s on Flatbush, Island Burger on Utica, but, Sugarcane Restaurant was it and the place popular too, cause we had to wait to be seated. Of course we make friends wherever we go and the staff was so friendly; the manager Wendell was so nice, he took good care of us, and the food… the food was amazing; the callaloo, macaroni pie and stew chicken was bess….

So after eating up a storm we headed to Casym panyard on Church Avenue. It's the first time in Brooklyn so we were behaving never-comeseeish like we never see a pan yard before but being in Brooklyn watching the youths on the pan and watching the folks who were just enjoying the music because they love their culture was wonderful.

Wednesday 31^st August

(Happy Independence Trinidad and Tobago)

The lime was by the Pagwah Mas Camp on Nostrand Avenue cause as you know that was August 31^st Trinidad and Tobago independence and this J’ouvert mas camp advertise Lord Nelson so we headed over there to enjoy the festivities. This was a J’ouvert Band with a difference yes; the J’ouvert costumes were designed to look like a Minshall mas, nice nice pieces, how you go play J’ouvert and get them nice outfits dirty.

Lord Nelson at 80 looked great in his signature body suit and boy was he was ready to give us a stellar performance. However the DJ for the night (who shall remain nameless) messed up a good time, this man was wheeling Nelson's tune over and over again in the middle of the performance (WTH!). Something Positive (Dance troupe from NY) also took the stage accompanied by the great Singing Sandra, but again DJ Mess-Up let everyone in the yard know he didn’t know what he was doing. We were so mad, because we were trying to enjoy independence as best as we could (Since it ain’t have curfew in Brooklyn) with some of the living legends from our country and this man just kept playing music while they were performing, we had to leave when Dane Gulston took to the stage..... we love that pan man and DJ Run-Crowd ran us home! (rolling my eyes).

Thursday 1^st September

We had to hit Sugarcane again and had a "Maracas" (a fancy Bake and Shark) and checked out Karma to make sure the costumes were ready. Then it was off to the yard at the Brooklyn Museum (The New York version of Queens Park Savannah) for old mas and party... it was nice, the crowd wasn’t big but we had fun anyway.

Friday 2^nd September

We started the day off kinda early, we didn’t want to miss anything as we heard Kes the band was performing on Fox 5 morning show. So we were in nightgowns still with the TV on waiting from 8 in morning to see the band...then at 9:50AM it happened... Kes the band graced the Fox 5 morning show, not singing there alternative material but hit Soca songs “Where yuh From" and "Wotless”. I real smile at the huge T&T Flag that was hanging on the speaker box throughout their performance.

For the Friday night we went right back to the Museum for Brass Fest....yes....they have a Brass Fest and talk about people which made sense cause Machel Montano HD and Kes the Band were headlining along with WCK, Lyrikal, Skinny Fabulous and Soca princess Devyn.

Little Devyn, ain’t easy nah she perform with a band and my girl had dancers, choreographed moves and thing.. and a new song “Jab Jab Whistle”. Lyrikal did his thing as usual, we now know he could wine (blushing).

So in true Macco Style we peeped Machel with he new “Boo”, my girl was snuggled up close before and after the show. We also peeped famous radio personality with his family Ian "D Goose" Eligon , Former BET host AJ also attended, a surprise performance from Michelle Xavier (Imij and Company). But hear this it was quite interesting that just after she performed with Kes, he then announced that Nadia Batson was no longer with them and that she is starting her first all girl band. We were wondering and we have a strong feeling that maybe Kes was throwing hints our way, could it be that Michelle Xavier is now going to be a member of Kes the Band? Hmmm…only time will tell.

That show was amazing, we fete till we couldn’t stand up then we crawled to back of the crowds where there were a bunch of vendors to get a corn soup and some doubles (Yes is doubles ah say Brooklyn have it all). They even had a Bake and Shark vendor (Tobago Bake and Shark to be exact) with long long lines which is the only reason we didn’t get any.

We almost felt like we were back home in the savannah Yes!

Saturday 3^rd September

We slept for most of the day and then got dressed and went to a party titled "3 The Hard Way" at Volume 2 Mas Camp on Veronica Place, this party was definitely for the grown and sexy. The Djs were on point, especially DJ Funky Fat Boy, this man had an 80’s session of music that had the whole party moving. At about 4: 00AM me the whole crew left the party hungry and someone suggested we go to Trini breakfast shed on Church Avenue.....we ordered some doubles with tamarind sauce and slight pepper, please note we said SLIGHT PEPPER, like this young boy didn’t know the meaning of slight; pepper bun we eyes noses ears and bellies and that was from eating one doubles.

Yeah not we again, We good! Lol

Sunday 4^th September

We made our way around Brooklyn making sure we had all the necessities for mas on Monday.... Costume ready so now I can continue to fete.

We went back to the Brooklyn Museum for the Dimanche Gras show....we were thinking they have calypso competition too! but no it was performances by the some of the greatest artistes in the biz, from Little Devyn to Kofi (10 year old from Monserrat), Red Plastic Bag, All Rounder (first in a red suit then in silver tights I had to mention that), Swallow, the Mighty Sparrow, King David Rudder, Singing Diane, Benjai and many more and they even had Kings and Queens of the band (savannah vibes we say).

My friends then took me to KesFyah, a party with Kes the band and Krosfyah. Krosfyah was great and as always so was Kes but what we were stunned by was the location of this fete, in the basement of a church, it was huge but we felt a lil funny ordering a vodka while standing in a church, but meh friend tell me that is normal so we got over it quick fast and had a time.

Monday 5^th September

(On the Road with KARMA Carnival band)

I couldn't even get up to meet the band fuss ah was tired but we had to because this was our first time and we wanted to experience everything. So we met the band and we hit the parkway. We were feeling a lil out of place cause everyone was repping a different country, some from Guyana, British Virgin Islands, Haiti, St Lucia, Grenada and one or 2 Trinis.

So now worries kick in, what if they don’t play no Iwer, Machel or Kes, what if they only play St. Lucian Music, what if we make a mistake here. All our fears were put to rest when the Dj started to play a complete mix of all kinds of soca and let me tell you, we didn’t stop jumping yet. At one instance this girl take of a police man hat put it on her head and advantaged him on the truck, the police didn’t seem to mind at all and it turned out that one of the artistes on the truck was none other than my good friend Mastamind.

Our band mates were friendly the KARMA crew ensured our security and made sure we had refreshments throughout the whole experience. However my new favorite tune is a song by St Lucian Artiste Crocodile titled “Ready Mixx Already Fixx”, an instruction song, we learned how to sit down and wine yes, it was wicked.

We pranced the whole of Eastern Parkway, our family called worried because they heard there was a shooting on the parkway. We had to tell them we didn't hear a thing, we crossed the stage at about 3-3:30PM then pranced our way back to the mas camp on Clarkson road for a home cooked meal (yes we get food).

All in all the Labor Day experience was quite an interesting one and my crew had a great time... For something that was not really happening in an island I felt close enough to home...for anyone who has never experienced the West Indian Day Parade I would say experience it at least once.... Shout out to WIADCA for all the hard work they do during the year and for the Labor Day celebrations......

Entertainment Macco Celebrates Caribbean Heritage Month: Shurwayne Winchester

In a proclamation on May 31st, 2011 from the White house of the United States of America, President Barack Obama declared June, 2011 as Caribbean History Month:

"NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2011 as National Caribbean American Heritage Month. A Taste Of White Wine

Many of us have a misconception that any person involved in SOCA, CALYPSO, REGGAE and other Caribbean genres must originate from an island that indulges in it. WhiteWine however is different all together and has been proving that misconception wrong. Entertainment Macco found a special interest in WhiteWine and had to take an available opportunity to find out as much as we could about him......

What we got was a TASTE OF WHITE WINE....

Entertainment Macco: So, tell me a little about White Wine, who are you?
White Wine: “Me? I’m a Canadian born, soca artist, songwriter and producer. I was born in Toronto and raised here. I got involved in the soca scene about 9 years ago and immediately caught the bug. I transitioned my singing career from rap to soca about 6 years ago, and started producing the music maybe about 4 years ago.”

Entertainment Macco: What is your given name?
White Wine: “Greg Smith”

Entertainment Macco: Hi Greg *waves*

Entertainment Macco: Where did the name White Wine come from?
White Wine: “Back in the days when I first started feteing I used to hit a lot of Dr. Jay de Soca Prince’s parties and he used to say that white boy could wine. Eventually he started calling me White Wine and the name stuck.”

Entertainment Macco: Are you single, in a relationship or married?
White Wine: “Oh lawwwd. I’m like ... say... I’m married to my family and my puppy.”

Entertainment Macco: What about children, do you have any?
White Wine: “Nah, no children, Just an English bulldog puppy.”

Entertainment Macco: For those who may not know, what role do you play in the entertainment industry?
White Wine: “Well right now I’m working with my partner in crime Jaxx, a major major star coming out of Toronto and Trinidad who can real sing. He bad…trust me, he bad. I’ve done a lot of production of the last 4 or so years, and song-writing. Between that and doing some singing myself I’ve been staying over-busy. Trying to keep my head above the water, grow, learn, and keep involved with the culture as much as I can."

Entertainment Macco:How did it begin for you?
White Wine: “Ha! Everyone seems to ask this. For me, I love to dance, I always have. But in my culture, white guys don’t dance. In college I met a few of my long time partnahs who started taking me out to dancehall jams and reggae shows and I would catch the steps pretty quickly. I enjoyed it but my next partnah, a trini, told me he wanted to bring me to a fete. From the first fete I ever went to I was locked onto soca. The positivity, the happiness and the vibes; I felt at home. From then on they created a monster.”

Entertainment Macco: Tell me about the pre-conceived notion people usually have when they see you?
White Wine: “I mean, I can’t speak for other people so I wouldn’t know. But I think I definitely stick out in a fete. Being a 6’4” white boy in a fete full of mostly black people – I stick out. It probably makes it worse because I’m wutless and will wine up on anything!”

Entertainment Macco: When people hear your work, does there impression of you change?
White Wine: “I think it does. I think that most people have been warm and open to my music, my style. I think others are surprised. I also think I have a lot to learn, and that the learning and growing process is what keeps me enthused with the music.”

Entertainment Macco: Who are some of the artistes you have worked with?
White Wine: “I’ve done some things with Jaxx, Fadda Fox, Berbice, Mr. Killa, Lavaman, Problem Child, Luni Sparks & Electrify, Brotha B, Scrappy, Lutenants, Mista Meggy, Cabelous, Radford Ettienne, Stray Way, gosh…so much people, I know I’m missing people.”

Entertainment Macco: In one of our conversations, you mentioned to me jokingly that "white people" do not have riddim, but I have seen you in action...this is not the case with you.. Tell me, when did you recognize a desire to be involved in Caribbean entertainment industry?
White Wine: “Ha! Honestly, my friends got me into it. Back when I was rapping, they jokingly told me to make a soca song. They expected I would ‘rap’ on a soca riddim – but I ended up trying to do follow the tempos and rhythms of real soca music. This was back in 2006 area, and when I touched down in Trinidad with the same friends, their family were playing my song when we reached their home. They all laughed, but said it wasn’t all that bad. It obviously needed work , and from there I started the journey into the music.”

Entertainment Macco: Do you have Caribbean roots? (If no how did you find a love for Soca, Calypso and other Caribbean genres)
White Wine: “Nah, I’m pure Canadian. At least 6 generations deep! Like I said before, I just can’t help but enjoy the positive vibes of the music and the culture.”

Entertainment Macco: Are you a full-time artiste/producer? If no, what industry do you work in?
White Wine: “Unfortunately not. It’s not lucrative enough yet, and that’s the next step. Currently I’m a graphic designer. I’m an artist to the core.”

Entertainment Macco: When did you realize that you had a love for music; producing, writing and singing?

White Wine: "All my life. I grew up with music, but not in the traditional sense. My parent's had an affinity for big band music and I grew up listening to that a lot - but no one in my family was really musically inclined. When I was about 12 or 13 my brother became a DJ and I used to carry his records for him. He spun mostly electronic music and then eventually ended up producing that. But he always listened to rap music and that's how I got into that. It was something in me to write. No one in my neighbourhood was into the music, and I've always been on the outskirts of the mainstream with my tastes. I had a fairly prominent career in rap that I dropped because I wasn't catching the vibes of the culture and the scene. It was too negative for me, and it frustrated and annoyed me. That's when I met soca and fell in love. The rest is history being written."

Entertainment Macco: Tell me one thing that a lot of people may not know about you?
White Wine: “Umm…honestly, I’m an open book. I think mostly a lot of people are surprised to find out I have no Caribbean roots.”

Entertainment Macco: Describe your style?
White Wine: “Musically or Fashionably? Musically I think I’m very North American. I inject a lot of North American flow and sensibilities into my music. Fashionably I’ve been told I am a bit of a chameleon because my style changes so drastically. One day I’ll come out looking like a hardcore rocker, the next a bit of a surfer or hippy, and then I’ll clean it up and go with a suit or a bow tie with nerd chic. I just like to dress differently and have some pop to what I’m doing.”

Entertainment Macco: Tell me about some of your musical influences?
White Wine: “Wow…how much time you have? I’m influenced by ALL music. There are so many people and artists that have influenced my work. My biggest influence and mentor is Radford Ettienne; A Grenadian producer who has worked with many artists. He taught me how to engineer songs on the computer and for that I’m ever grateful.”

Entertainment Macco: We are still talking music so tell me about the songs you have recorded thus far and what genre?
White Wine: “Speaking to soca I’ve released a couple songs under my name, On De Road & Miss De Jam in ’08 and Push Bumpa in ’09. Crank came out in ’10 I think, and outside of that I’ve done a lot of music with Jaxx. He released Survey & Velcro last year and is looking to further promote them for 2012.”

Entertainment Macco: Is there any one or any persons that you would credit for your involvement in music?

White Wine: “Everyone has been really warm and welcoming and I’ve never experienced any negativity with my involvement in music. But Radford Ettienne was the one person who really took me under his wing and taught me a lot about the music, culture, and more.”

Entertainment Macco: I understand that you dog's name is Calypso? Is the naming of your dog an expression of your love for the genre?

White Wine: “Haha Yeah, he’s great. He’s an English bulldog. And definitely, he’s Calypso and I’m Soca.”

Entertainment Macco: What does sexy mean to you?

White Wine: “Confidence & self worth.”

Entertainment Macco: When you were/are searching for a mate do/did you prefer someone in the industry or out? Why?
White Wine: “I’ve never thought about it before. For me, it’s never been relevant to my quest, but they do have to be aware of the lifestyle and understanding of it.”

Entertainment Macco: What is the biggest turn on in the opposite sex?
White Wine: “Confidence & self worth. I used to say a woman’s best quality is being into me – does that count?”

Entertainment Macco: I’ll make it count....

Entertainment Macco: Let's steam it up a little, which do u prefer older or younger women and why?

White Wine: “Wow, this is some serious macco-ing right now. I don’t discriminate to be honest. Age doesn’t dictate experience or how someone carries themselves. But I do think it helps to be close in age, because I find it’s easier to understand each other.”

Entertainment Macco: What is your idea of romance?

White Wine: “Long walks on the beach? Fire side dinners? Hahaha”

Entertainment Macco: Which do you prefer relationships or one night stands?

White Wine: “Isn’t a one night stand a relationship?”

Entertainment Macco: What are your thoughts on same sex relationships?

White Wine: “I don’t give a damn – as long as it ain’t affecting me.”

Entertainment Macco: If you could choose to live anywhere other than Canada, where would it be and why?
White Wine: “I’ve never thought about it. I love Canada so much. I would need to be somewhere where I could live with the same freedoms, amenities and luxuries that I enjoy now. I appreciate everything I have here.”

Entertainment Macco: Tell me one accomplishment you would like to achieve in the near future?
White Wine: “Right now, I want to perform on the Monarch’s stage in Trinidad. That’d be a dream come true.”

Entertainment Macco: Why do you think there are more successful men in the entertainment industry than women?
White Wine: “I think maybe it has to do with the lifestyle and culture of music. Studios tend to be full of dudes and it’s an intimidating place for women. I also think that women don’t get as much respect as they deserve. I think there’s a culture around music and studio life, and it’s sort of like sports. It’s a competition. Inside the studio everyone is competing and only the strongest survive. Women tend to get pushed to the back unfortunately. I don’t really have any answers on how to fix it, or if it matters. I’m a person that believes truly that talent will prevail over all and I know a lot of talented female artists that are ready to blow.”

Entertainment Macco: Let's talk pet peeves, tell me that one thing that absolutely annoys you in the entertainment industry.

White Wine: “Hmm…in the entertainment industry? I can’t really say anything. I enjoy all aspects of it. To me it’s all a challenge.”

Entertainment Macco: What advice would you give to other upcoming producers/artistes who may not have Caribbean roots and are interested in being involved in the Caribbean music industry?
White Wine: “I’m not sure I’m even in a position to give advice, but I would say just believe in what you’re doing and get a good team of people around you that you trust. Most importantly – be yourself. I think at the end of the day everyone can respect that when they meet me I’m just a corny ass white dude from Toronto. I don’t pretend to be anything else. I might have a cultivated accent on occasion but that is nearly uncontrollable nowadays, it’s all practice to help assimilate my music and add authenticity to it. But at the end of the day I can only be me, and can only bring my perspective and my experiences to the music and the culture.”

Yankeyboy Sheds Light on Head Nice Rumours

Although he has been around the entertainment industry for quite some time, Kevon “Yankeyboy” Heath only decided to seriously venture into Soca music for Carnival 2K11. Almost instantly his first release “Head Nice” which featured Patch became a hit. Entertainment Macco had the opportunity to catch up with the Rum King himself and offcourse we did not hesitate to grill him, we even got him to shed some light on the rumours we were hearing. (Yes there were rumours) Have a good read guys and don’t forget to leave your comments.

Entertainment Macco: Who is Yankeyboy?

Yankeyboy: “I am now the “New York Rum King”, that’s a new name that was given to me. Haha! With Yankeyboy it is all about Swag and always being different. I always wanted to be different and it was because of this. People knew me before a song due to the image....”

Entertainment Macco: What is your government name?

Yankeyboy: “Kevon Bovel Heath.”

Entertainment Macco: Tell me your date of birth please...

Yankeyboy: “I was born on 28-04-83... That makes me a Taurus”

Entertainment Macco: Dude, you are almost as tall as a skyscraper... lol How tall are you?

Yankeyboy: “Haha....I am not that tall but I am 6”2.”

Entertainment Macco: Why the sobriquet Yankeyboy?

Yankeyboy: “When I use to live back in Trinidad anyone who really knows me would tell you that I used to be barefeet or dressed with no socks on and probably often seen walking around bareback and that changed when I went to NYC. When I came back home after 3 years they said the swag changed and started calling me a yankee, so I had to live up to the swag.”

Entertainment Macco: What part of Trinidad and Tobago are you originally from?

Yankeyboy: “Pinto Road, Arima...down in the ghetto.”

Entertainment Macco: How long have you been living overseas?

Yankeyboy: “It has been 10 years.”

Entertainment Macco: Are you single/in a relationship or married?

Yankeyboy: “I am a 100% single...I was in a relationship before but she couldn’t handle the studio life so now I single and I am dating!”

Entertainment Macco: What about children, do you have any?

Yankeyboy: “No children......but I am planning too in the next 1 ½ - 2 yrs once I find the right person. Once she isn’t jealous and understands what I am doing and she has to be somebody with some book sense because I have all the street sense.”

Entertainment Macco: How long has Yankeeboy been involved in the entertainment industry?

Yankeyboy: “It has really only been 2 years... I spent 1 year watching the game and building an image and then released music. I studied the game first...”

Entertainment Macco: Are you a full-time artiste?

Yankeyboy: “No but I am consumed by music.”

Entertainment Macco: What is your full-time profession?

Yankeyboy: “I have an 8-4...I rather not say what it is but I have another profession....a very legit one.”

Entertainment Macco: You were not always singing Soca, What other genres of music were you were involved in?

Yankeyboy: “I was playing around with hip hop and Trini reggae and having fun with that; I came out of the studio 53 camp, there was where it started for me. Until one day I realized that you could never be a number 1 reggae artiste because it is Jamaica’s thing but you could still strive in Soca and have one song and be the top soca artiste for that year.”

Entertainment Macco: Now, I am familiar with some of the work you have done before (because I am a macco), tell EM how the collaboration with Patch came about?

Yankeyboy: “Patch decided to work with me off of my hard work and seeing me perform.”

Entertainment Macco: Explain?

Yankeyboy: “I was in Boston on a show and Patch was on the same show. I had a riddim the KIS riddim which I was playing and vibing with at the house; we were in the same house. I started singing the melody and the hook hoping it would catch his attention, which did happen. He came out of his room and asked me to sing, which I did. He got really hyped and asked me to sing the song with me saying that the song would be big in Trinidad. He started singing along and said to add the second hook that was how the ‘Head nice’ part came about as well...”

Yankeyboy: “That is how we ended up linking. It wasn’t a plan because we didn’t know each other before and it was just vibes...same place at the same time...”

Entertainment Macco: How did the concept of “Head Nice” come about? Tell me about the motivation...

Yankeyboy: “Well for anyone who knows me most of my songs are about drinking. I don’t sing about girls because I don’t want people to know what I am thinking or risk the chance of offending anyone...I don’t do the waving thing because it have people for that. The drinking is something I really do so it was easy.”

Entertainment Macco: You love the rum boy? Uhhmmm Right!

Yankeyboy: “Girl to tell you the truth I almost forget this interview because I was going to drink. I reach in front by Lyrikal them and had to turn back...Haha.”

Entertainment Macco: Who wrote the song?

Yankeyboy: “Both Patch and I initially.”

Entertainment Macco: How did Cassie end up being part of the collaboration?

Yankeyboy: “Patch and I were at the studio recording and decided to take a break and go catch something to eat. While we were doing that Cassie was passing and hailed out Patch. Apparently he was having issues and Patch asked to put it on the song. Cassie wrote his part as well...”

Entertainment Macco: What was your reaction to the request?

Yankeyboy: “I didn’t want him on the song because I didn’t know him but after careful consideration I figured if Patch was looking out for me then I should look out for him too. That was it really.”

Entertainment Macco: Who own the song?

Yankeyboy: “Me, Patch and the Producer (Obanga)”

Entertainment Macco: Well Head Nice turned out to be one of the popular songs this season, But I had no idea you sang on that song, before you got to Trinidad, many people were under the impression that the song was owned by Patch, do you think it was the public’s misconception as Patch has been around longer or do you think that Patch saw an opportunity to own the tune?

Yankeyboy: “I think Patch saw an opportunity to own the song...every DJ in Trini said Patch gave them the CD and it said Patch on it. No mention of Yankeyboy was made according to the CD’s that these DJ’s showed me that he distributed.”

Entertainment Macco: When did all this take place?

Yankeyboy: “This was happening behind my back because i didn’t reach Trinidad as yet.”

Entertainment Macco: So we have heard many rumours that you and Patch have some sort of beef going on (or should I refer to it as a misunderstanding).....Could you shed some light on this for me?

Yankeyboy: “We fixed the misunderstanding but the damage has already been done..but I will just act normal because that is the type of person I am. This controversy just gave my career a push because the streets didn’t like what they were seeing and hearing. Would you believe that people made it their business to find me and let me know what was happening?”

Entertainment Macco: Did you expect that something like this would happen?

Yankeyboy: “Never! Not at all. We planned everything out. Everything was so different when we linked up and spoke or at least that was what I thought. So I didn’t expect that at all...”

Entertainment Macco: I did some digging, (I bet you are not surprised) and I called COTT only to hear that ‘Head Nice’ is registered to Patch and Cassie, can you explain this?

Yankeyboy: “Well when I realized that the song was registered without me I called Patch and he said that the reason it was done like that was because he didn’t know that I was a member of COTT. So he told me to fill out the form and he would sign it.”

Entertainment Macco: Did you fill out the form?

Yankeyboy: “Yes I did."

Entertainment Macco: So Soca Monarch night came and for the viewing audience many were wondering again, whether you were part of the collaboration, a prop or a hype man, why did you take a back seat during the performance?

Yankeyboy: “The reason for that was because of the energy and vibes, it was off. I was glad to be there but I wasn’t comfortable. I came up for my part and did my thing and went back to where I was. If a next man wanted his shine then let him go ahead because I know what I can do. But real talk I really didn’t want to be there at that point in time.....There was a point in time when I almost came back to NYC out of frustration”

Entertainment Macco: So while we on the topic of Soca Monarch, I heard a rumour that Patch called Caribbean Prestige Foundation (CPF) and tried to get your name removed, saying that he was the owner of the song and that you would not be able to sing in the finals as you were going back to NYC, is there any truth to this?

Yankeyboy: “What I can say is this; I received a call from CPF enquiring about the same thing you heard on the streets. I called Patch and he denied it so I really don’t know if the streets telling the truth, if there was a mix up at CPF and well Patch said it wasn’t the truth so I guess I eh have no choice but to believe Patch.”

Entertainment Macco: The highlight of the performance was when you put a bottle of Hennessy to your head and began drinking it.....hear nah, was that real Hennessy or was it Mauby?

Yankeyboy: “It was really Hennessey, it was something I practiced. For the entire week before Soca Monarch I was drinking molasses and honey to prepare my stomach and to keep my throat in a gear for that.”

Entertainment Macco: A little birdy told me you passed out backstage after the performance as a result of your head being nice? True of False?

Yankeyboy: “TRUE I went in the production room and meh head was really nice. Those fellas were laughing at me..but it is true...”

Entertainment Macco: We picked up a copy of the Best Of Best Soca Hits album and noticed that there was another version of “Head Nice” (The godfather chutney remix) with just mention being made of Patch, How come you didn’t sing on that version?

Yankeyboy: “Both Cassi and I are in the song but once again my name was not included.”

Entertainment Macco: Is that an issue for you?

Yankeyboy: “No it does not bother me because the streets already know that I have a part to play in the song....”

Entertainment Macco: What is your favourite alcoholic drink? (If he says Hennessy ask what is so special about that drink...)

Yankeyboy: “Hennessy for sure!”

Entertainment Macco: What is so special about this drink?

Yankeyboy: “For me when I drink it I don’t get headaches or any bad feeling and yuh head does really get nice. Before I sing I would always take a shot, it is like my energy.”

Entertainment Macco: Explain the feeling of qualifying for Soca Monarch finals at your first attempt.

Yankeyboy: “I felt real good. However it wasn’t all about me, I am feeling great for the people who knew me before because the whole of Brooklyn congratulating me. I was studying about the people in the US who were supporting and backing me. My facebook went from 3000 – 5000 in days; I had to open another page. Being acknowledged by people like Machel and Bunji is amazing...my dream wasn’t to reach so far so quickly. Honestly reaching finals was ahead of my plans and I am still trying to ketch up with myself.”

Entertainment Macco: When you realized that “Head Nice” was one of the bigger songs for Carnival 2k11 what was your reaction?

Yankeyboy: “The first time I heard it I was in a bar I nearly buy drinks for everyone in the bar...it was overwhelming. It proved that hard work really does pay off. The fact that once people could relate to it is also great.”

Entertainment Macco: The hype about “Head Nice” has not died as yet and I am hearing another track that is sure to cause a stir, “Drunkin On De Road” tell me a little about this new release?

Yankeyboy: “To be honest that song getting a heavy buzz in New York, Boston and Washington.”

Entertainment Macco: The song was released before “Head Nice” right?

Yankeyboy: ”Yes it was I held it back, many people in Trini wanted to know why I didn’t release it but I really opted to not push it and hold it. I do not want to over flood the airwaves but to always give people something and remain consistent.”

Entertainment Macco: What is up with these colourful hats that you are always wearing?

Yankeyboy: “Talpree calls me visa hat and people call him visa hair because it is said that if either of us decide to get rid of our signature look no one will recognize us. I have like 48 of these hats. People got scared when I threw away the hat in Soca Monarch finals. These hats are specially made for me by someone and not one of them is identical to the other; the colours in the front are always different, more red or green etc.”

Entertainment Macco: Do you have a special interest in fashion? Or plans to develop something in the future?

Yankeyboy: “My swag is different and I do have a thing for fashion and I can see myself venturing into that business....”

Entertainment Macco: I understand you used to play Steelpan? I am shocked....tell me a little about that...

Yankeyboy: “I am a crackshot, I won 3 school music festivals for Arima Senior Comprehensive, I’ve been on tour twice. I’ve played with Exodus and Defence Force. During the Carnival season I used to play with 5-8 bands.”

Entertainment Macco: Generally what are your views on the Soca Industry?

Yankeyboy: “Everyone is for self; there is lack of co operation. Not forgetting that there are very few genuine people. It is so serious that it makes me feel to move the same way but I am different...I am still trying to figure out if it is the right thing.”

Entertainment Macco: Why do you think there are more successful men than women in the entertainment industry ?

Yankeyboy: “It is easier for men to put themselves out there...the way that I see it so far is, if a female wants to get by she has to sleep with someone, that is how it looks. People are not willing to help women too much, men don’t have much to lose as far as reputation is concerned and they have less sacrifices to make”

Entertainment Macco: Tell me that one thing that absolutely annoys and frustrates you about the Soca industry?

Yankeyboy: "The fact that people think they are better than you when you all are really on the same level....the whole fight down scene...”

Entertainment Macco: What is your biggest turn on in the opposite sex?

Yankeyboy: “The walk does just turn me on boy!!!”

Entertainment Macco: What is sexy to you?

Yankeyboy: “Down to earth and willing to do anything...being open-minded and free spirited is super sexy to me.”

Entertainment Macco: When you are looking for a mate do you look for someone in the industry or out of the industry and why?

Yankeyboy: “Nobody in the industry....because people in the industry like to go behind yuh woman when she in the industry. Haha. People woman does come to me and I can’t do anything about it because they are my friends. But seriously some of them fellas ruthless!”

Entertainment Macco: What can we expect from Yankeeboy in the near future?

Yankeyboy: “More rum, more swag, more realness and big entourage... I have already recorded 5 songs which includes two collaborations one with Makamillion and the other with Sugar Jay, the rest are singles. There is also one to come with Lyrikal and I. Real things about to happen!”

Entertainment Macco: Are you working on any new songs?

Yankeyboy: “I have a song coming out on the 15^th of this month, it’s called “More Rum”, it’s based on a true story, on my life and I think people are going to love it and I have “Get in the Section” which was done for a mas band in NYC for labour day.”

Entertainment Macco: Would you like to shout out anyone? The floor is open

Yankeyboy: “Thank you Problem Child he always gives me sound advice and shout out to Tallpree for the insight into the game, he is meh real friend. Buffy is like my little sister so mad love to her. When I heard his ever popular song “King Road” on the radio, I thought to myself, this guy might be on to something and then my next reaction was to obviously macco. Recently EM had the opportunity to interview one of the newest sensations to come out of the Island of St. Vincent, Maddzart. Now although he may appear to be new to the industry, it is quite the opposite. I must add that Zart (as I am now allowed to call him) is quite the joker and did not ease me up during this interview. St. Vincent stand up! Again.....

Entertainment Macco: Who is Maddzart?

Maddzart: “I am just a human with the same feelings and problems as any other but am known for my entertainment work. I am currently the reigning roadmarch monarch of St. Vincent.”

Entertainment Macco: What is your given name?

Maddzart: “Raeon Primus”

Entertainment Macco: Explain the sobriquet for me? What is the significance?

Maddzart: “Madd is basically because I am a mad man, my position on most world and social issues and even matters of the heart is normally contrary to that of the world. The Zart came from Mozart one of the greatest classical musicians, I love classical music I grew up exposed to it in all them tom and jerry cartoons not knowing what I was listening too, I believe I am Mozart reincarnated as Maddzart.”

Entertainment Macco: Your Date of Birth and sign please...

Maddzart: “24th November 1978. Saggitarius...Hau!”

Entertainment Macco: Now, you are new eye candy on the block; it comes with the territory, so I have to ask, are you single/in a relationship/married?

Maddzart: “Legally single but have a special young lady for the past few months and we are moving fast.”

Entertainment Macco: What about children, do you have any? Any plans?

Maddzart: “I don’t think so.... I plan on having, I am a few years behind on that, but I have to find the right lady to do that with. My mom is a single mom and I am not looking to put any woman through that even though my mom managed great I never felt like a dad was missing, she did it all including the daddy style beating.”

Entertainment Macco: How long have you been involved in the entertainment industry?

Maddzart: “Been entertaining for 32 years but I have been in the industry for about 25 years....However I been in Soca for a little over 11 years.”

Entertainment Macco: How many songs have you written, recorded and released?

Maddzart: “Over a 100 written and recorded and releases....”

Entertainment Macco: Is that legal? J/K

Maddzart: “Yah I do an average of 10 songs per year in carnival, collaborations and all that.”

Entertainment Macco: I understand that the original chanter on Kevin Lyttle’s Turn me on was you, is that correct?

Maddzart: “Yes.”

Entertainment Macco: What happened though, no one seemed to know this, and instead we all saw Spranger Benz....explain that to me

Maddzart: “Me and Kevin had 2 different directions at the time, we were never a team his management probably did what they thought was in the best interest of the song at the time for marketing reasons but it was never a case of me and Kevin having any falling out we good up until this day, we speak all the time.”

Entertainment Macco: I understand you are part of a band? Tell me about that...

Maddzart: “I own a band! What I have is the Madd Symphony the idea is to be like a Broadway show like "cats" we present this ongoing show every Carnival... it is consisted of the front line performers myself Dlanlord and Tamisha we call the musician RHUM Ridiculously High Under Music those elements and our crew come together to form Maddzart & the Madd symphony again the classical music in me (smiley face)”

Entertainment Macco: Now....You were heavily involved in Dancehall, how did you end up singing Soca?

Maddzart: “On the local scene yah..I used to be the MC for a sound system similar to what Tony Matterhorn does.”

“Some jumbie probably! One day we were in the studio and we were playing Sisqo's “Thong Song” and i was like hmmm I’m going to make a Soca. With that I went to Adrian Bailey the "Turn me on" producer and told him yow record this tune for me, and he put it on his band album it was a hit off the bat, I came second in Soca Monarch that year and it gave me my first ticket out of SVG "Town Song"

Entertainment Macco: Tell me about some of your career achievements thus far...

Maddzart: “In 2009 won Raga Soca Monarch, in 2010 I came 3rd in Raga Soca Monarch and 3rd Soca Monarch and Road March.”

Entertainment Macco: Your popularity has trickled over to Trinidad and Tobago, how did the song King Road come about? What was the thought process behind it?

Maddzart: “MY CAPITAL is Kingstown so everything in the town belongs to the King; the road, the truck, buildings etc belong to the King and carnival is held in Kingstown, that’s the idea but the inspiration to do that song came from my drummer”

Entertainment Macco: So you trying to tell me this song has no double meaning?

Maddzart: “Well arrmmmmmmmmmmmmmm no I was shocked when people were taking it for double meaning.....”

Entertainment Macco: Now that you are enjoying the success of your runaway hit, King Road, tell me did you expect the success you are enjoying right now?

Maddzart: “To be honest when an artiste put his or her work together you dream at the highest but still you are always surprised at the success, is like a good horror movie you see it over and over and you still feel the suspense and bite your nails every time”

Entertainment Macco: When and how did you find out that you were receiving tremendous airplay in Trinidad and Tobago?

Maddzart: “During my carnival from a UWI student via email then I got a face book message from a friend in the army in Germany who was listening to RED 96.7. Just after that Trini Dj’s started finding me during the summer and the rest is history”

Entertainment Macco: What was your initial reaction?

Maddzart: “Absolutely stunned and excited.”

Entertainment Macco: Have you been trying to get your music played in Trinidad? If so how easy or hard has it been?

Maddzart: “I think I was hoping more than trying, never really made a huge attempt at it, I always believed that when I came Trini first I wanna come extra good......”

Entertainment Macco: What other genres do you enjoy singing/writing/performing?

Maddzart: “Dancehall, Reggae, I recorded a few beautiful pieces. I listen to other types of music as well and add them to my band repertoire from time to time for colour”

Entertainment Macco: Now I know that most artiste consider Trinidad the mecca of carnival, how do you feel about that?

Maddzart: “By far...undoubtedly the Mecca of carnival..... It embodies international carnival.”

Entertainment Macco: There is a song that you did that just really caught my attention “Poor People Anthem”..... Tell me a little about the thought process behind this track.

Maddzart: “That’s the song I won the first Ragga Soca Monarch with. I created that song a day while walking to the studio. I designed the lyrics and melody in my head and then went to the studio and created the music. It came from a natural place.”

Entertainment Macco: Explain this natural place...

Maddzart: “I mean a lot of it is what I have seen, been close to or experienced, I know that life. My mom went through a lot with me even as a baby she was literally homeless with me in her arms. But even without fortunes she spoilt me.”

Entertainment Macco: Later on the track was remixed with Bunji, what initiated that decision, Why Bunji?

Maddzart: “Well firstly, Bunji when he came to St Vincent and we met he expressed great appreciation for that song and secondly Bunji’s image defines the defender of the poor in my opinion so it was not a hard decision to make. I made one phone call, flew him in and that’s it.”

Entertainment Macco: Zart (since I am allowed to call you that) “Whyne Pon Me” was released around the same time as King Road, why do you think it has not reached to the masses like King Road?
Maddzart: “I defended my Ragga Soca Monarch crown with “Wine Pon Me”. I think “King Road” is peoples’ love for that song for what they get out of it they get to misbehave in ways they never got to before and it created a whole new way of saying things.”

Entertainment Macco: Ok...so this is my final questions on your releases (for the while) because there is so much that I want to get out of you. How did the remix with Shurwayne Winchester come about and why did you pick him?

Maddzart: “My manager and my host in Trinidad were going to handle my business and I was not in the mood so I stayed home, when they return they told me that Shurwyne was interested in doing the remix etc and the rest is history, he did a great job.”

Entertainment Macco: What is the difference between Maddzart on stage and the Maddzart offstage?

Maddzart: “I am a Saggitarius haha... my sign is half animal, half human. The animal is on stage and off stage I am shy and extremely humble, I hate attention offstage.”

Entertainment Macco: Is there anything else that you enjoy doing other than music? Please share...

Maddzart: “Playing cards, I love a lot of alone time, I love heckling people and I make jokes out of the most serious situation. I don’t ponder on problems; I think about what can be done to fix it; if it can’t be fixed move on.”

Entertainment Macco: Can you compare the Vincentian music industry to the Trinidadian industry, what are some of the similarities?

Maddzart: “We both have vibes and it is represented in our music. The culture is the same for sure usually what is the Vincy hit song is normally a hit song in Trini also, for example Kevin little, Godfrey Dublin, Skinny, Problem Child, Becket, Scorher.”

Entertainment Macco: So now that St. Vincent's carnival is quickly approaching, tell me about some of your plans and releases?

Maddzart: “Basically you know Carnival in St. Vincent is different to carnival in Trinidad and the market is different, so you know we don’t put things too much in black and white in terms of going forward in terms of releases. We put out songs and see what direction they head in and then how far apart, the next release will be.”

Entertainment Macco: How is your most recent track "Hello Bumper" being received?

Maddzart: “For all intent and purposes that basically was geared towards a particular niche, when them ladies come out carnival Monday, Tuesday, Jouvert in the fete or whatever to behave wassi and the response has been from the females has been all thumbs up so far. I have been receiving a lot of feedback so far and you know whatever the females love men love because wherever the gyal them there we there too. The track has been paving the way for what else is there to come”

Entertainment Macco: Where else can you be seen during the upcoming months, as far as bookings are concerned?
Maddzart: “Normally I tend to remain exclusive to Vincy mas and carnival home between the periods May to early July. I like to dedicate that 2 months to home and performances at home, however I think management informed me about something brewing in London in June. I am not so sure what will happen as far as accepting because we have some important things happening at home but we will see.”

Entertainment Macco: Do you plan on taking part in competition at home this year?

Maddzart: “Competition is never really a major part of how I go into carnival, when I say competitions I mean Calypso monarch or Soca monarch etcetera. I don’t really go into the studio thinking about that, I want to come out with the best product and the best song, making sure everything is right and the people love the music regardless of if I am in formal competitions. I cannot tell you what I will be doing as yet as far as competitions go.”

Entertainment Macco: What would you like to be recognized for?

Maddzart: “Making a change socially and politically on earth.”

Entertainment Macco: What are you complimented about the most?

Maddzart: “Physically my dreads and probably my lips - most girls just wanna abuse them...”

Entertainment Macco: What is Sexy to you?

Maddzart: “Innocence is sexy, i mean a well clothed inexperienced look is good...not the putting it out there look. Ladies need to allow men to make use of the naughty mind we were born with, let us think and imagine”

Entertainment Macco: What quality do you admire most in the opposite sex?

Maddzart: “Honesty and physically nice teeth..”

Entertainment Macco: What is it that separates you from others in the industry?

Maddzart: “I am well rounded I do everything, produce, arrange, perform, play instruments, sing, manage, write, mix and master and the list goes on.”

Entertainment Macco: What is the best advice you ever received and from whom?

Maddzart: “My granny - Do good and good will follow you, she is blind and just turned 96 a couple weeks ago.”

COTT responds to High Deductions Allegations

In the last interview published, we highlighted allegations made by the President of the Recording Industry Association of Trinidad and Tobago (RIATT), Mr. Fabien Alfonso towards the Copyright Organization of Trinidad and Tobago (COTT). It was alleged that COTT deductions have been much higher than the advised percentage. After the interview published we spoke with Ms. Melissa Arnaud, COTT's Comunication Officer, who was more than willing to assist with all the queries and questions raised by RIATT and COTT members. Attached are two documents which COTT has used to help address this matter..... This interview is like no other, as it tackles the business and operational aspects of the industry. Yes we macco these issues too.

Entertainment Macco: Can you please give a brief description of COTT, how long has the organization been around and what exactly the organization does, and how does one become a member?

COTT: "The Copyright Music Organisation of Trinidad and Tobago (COTT) is a non-profit making membership organisation of songwriters, composers, lyricists, and music publishers of all genres. The organisation was incorporated in 1984 and has been operating since January 1985. COTT administers, i.e. grants permission for the public performance, broadcasting, communication to the public, mechanical reproduction and synchronisation rights granted by law to music users from the creators and owners of original music.

To be eligible for COTT membership you must meet at least one of the following criteria:

• your music is published by a person or company that carries on business as a music publisher, OR

• your music has been released as a commercial recording, OR

• your music has been publicly performed or broadcasted within the last year and that performance is licensed by COTT (i.e. on radio, television, in concert, clubs, etc.).

There is an application fee of One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) Non-refundable"

Entertainment Macco: In the press release issued by COTT (seen below), the increased percentages were as a result of the "onset of the Global Recession" and "the imminent mortgage obligation for its new Headquarters", was this information ever communicated to the members?

COTT: "This was communicated to our members as it is our obligation to do so. In fact, we had members meetings throughout the period addressing this, sent letters to all members and met with those who were aggrieved."

Entertainment Macco: Has COTT ever taken 78% in administration rates?

COTT: "Administration rate refers to the overall cost of collecting relative to overall revenue and it has never been 78%. There are different distributions streams which will have their own administration costs attached to them. The 78% refers to one of those distributions streams, General Distribution. Note this distribution stream is the most costly to collect because of the non compliant nature of music users in Trinidad and Tobago generally. Representatives of COTT must actually visit clients (most times repeatedly) to collect what is owed to members and endure the trials when facing uncooperative clients. Unlike our sister organisation TONO, in Norway, which has no representatives as music users voluntarily pay for use of music without an approach from TONO."

Entertainment Macco: What is the highest amount that COTT has ever deducted to cover administrations expenses?

COTT: "60% in 2009; this is year that COTT has taken out 78% in the general distribution category."

Entertainment Macco: Pardon my ignorance but i am under the impression that COTT works with other copyright organization's worldwide and collect royalties for nonmembers and this money is then sent to the organizations that represent these members, are COTT administration rates deducted from these monies as well? and is it at the same rate as deducted from members of COTT?

COTT: "Yes we do for both instances."

Entertainment Macco: If for a particular period the administration rates are unusually high, does COTT attach an addendum to member statements with an explanation?

COTT: "COTT, as happened in all occasions and mentioned previously, has communicated to its members through our members meetings, which happens after a royalty distribution, and sent letters when these incidences happened."

Entertainment Macco: The dates that you supplied the deduction rates span from 2006 -2009, with the exception of 2007 the rates have steadily increased and as you state this is due to the global recession and the acquisition of the new headquarters, so has the deduction rates for 2010 increased from the 60%?

COTT: "No, in fact it has decreased as the unaudited administration rate for 2010 is 40%."

Entertainment Macco: Since the release of the letter by members of COTT and RIATT, have members been contacting the organisation to highlight their concerns? Is this the first time that members have raised questions with regards to this issue?

COTT: "Firstly, RIATT has no formal relationship with COTT. As such our obligation is not to this organisation but to our members. Since the release of the letter, we have had 3 members contacting us directly i.e. they have sent in letters. Also, administration rates are one of the key performance indicators that are used in the management of collecting societies and are always monitored by the Board and Management."

Entertainment Macco: When does COTT plan to finalise a date to meet with members?

COTT: "We have scheduled to meet on Thursday April 14^th 2011 at COTT’s Head Office, 139-141 Abercromby Street, Port of Spain for 5:30pm with our members only."

Entertainment Macco: With your press release you also included page from a WIPO Document (See below) The Setting -up of New Copyright Societies written by Dr Ulrich Uchtenhagen, page 11 point 24 where it states verbatim:

"24.A copyright society can only claim to have “efficient management”

if the costs of that management remain within a reasonable range.

Here again, international standards apply as already mentioned. The

deduction of costs up to 30% for the management of performance and

broadcasting rights and up to 25% for the management of reproduction

rights, can be justified on condition that the distribution activities

lead to regular, detailed and individual accounts for each author and

publisher. These percentages can be provisionally exceeded in times of

high inflation, for instance, or where there has been large-scale investment

in facilities such as the procurement of a data processing system.

Be that as it may, a copyright society whose deductions continually

exceed the above-mentioned standards signals problems of

sustainability and is therefore considered ripe for a review of its administrative

structure."

Based on the figures you provided showing an increase in fees, is COTT in Trouble?

COTT: "The document supplied was the “guidelines” that RIATT used to support their argument and as such we supplied it to you as reference. To give some background information, The Setting -up of New Copyright Societies – Experiences and Reflexions paragraph 24 is premised on what was written in paragraph 23:

“23.Whether or not the amounts paid are commensurate depends essentially on the calculation of the tariffs, constituting the calculation basis for the royalties or remuneration paid by the users. Guidance is given by national usage and international standards, particularly:

the “10 % rule” according to which the authors and publishers are entitled to 1/10th of all income obtained by copyright users from the exploitation of the works;
the “pro-rata temporis rule” according to which the 10 % share of the authors and publishers is proportionally reduced where protected and free works are exploited together;
the “ballet rule” according to which the 10 % share of the authors and publishers is also proportionally reduced where several works are exploited at the same time.”

Entertainment Macco: Alright understood, continue...

COTT: "None of COTT’s tariffs are at a 10% level, as per paragraph 23. Given the non compliant nature of music users in T&T it is highly unlikely that COTT can collect at this level successfully, though it would be great to do so, as the market does not support that level of tariff,. Finally, but most importantly, in the preface to the publication mentioned above, a disclaimer reads as follows which is very important:

“The opinions contained in this publication reflect only the views of the author and not necessarily those of WIPO”

Therefore by this document, WIPO does not set any admin rates or tariff rates for Collective Management societies, which is outside its remit."

Entertainment Macco: Explain the function of WIPO

COTT: "The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations. It is dedicated to developing a balanced and accessible international intellectual property (IP) system, which rewards creativity, stimulates innovation and contributes to economic development while safeguarding the public interest. Entertainment Macco: What else is there to know about WIPO?

COTT: "It is important to know that WIPO does not set standards for Collective Management Organisations such as COTT, CISAC does. CISAC, the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers, works towards increased recognition and protection of creators’ rights. CISAC was founded in 1926 and is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation. Its headquarters are in Paris, with regional offices in Budapest, Santiago de Chile, Johannesburg and Singapore."

Entertainment Macco: What are the aims of CISAC?

COTT: "CISAC’s main activities and member services aim to:

- To strengthen and develop the international network of copyright societies

- To secure a position for creators and their collective management organisations in the international scene;

- To adopt and implement quality and technical efficiency criteria to increase copyright societies’ interoperability;

- To support societies’ strategic development in each region and in each repertoire;

- To retain a central database allowing societies to exchange information efficiently;

- To participate in improving national and international copyright laws and practices.

As of June 2010, CISAC numbers 229 authors’ societies from 121 countries and indirectly represents around 3 million creators and music publishers within all the artistic repertoires: music, drama, literature, audio-visual, graphic and visual arts. < http://www.cisac.org/CisacPortal/afficherArticles.do?menu=main&item=tab2&store=true> COTT is the only Collecting Society in Trinidad and Tobago recognized by CISAC. RIATT Questions COTT

Recently EM received correspondence from musical consultant Mr. Fabien Alfonso highlighting the questioning of COTT's (Copyright Organization of Trinidad & Tobago) fees. The letter which is attached below called on COTT's board members to explain the seeminly unethical fees being charged for management of artistes copyright's affairs. Since this issue directly affects the recording artiste in Trinidad and Tobago, EM saw it necessary to contact Mr. Fabien for him to shed some light on the issue. This interview is like no other, as it tackles the business and operational aspects of the industry. Yes we macco these issues too.

Entertainment Macco: What organization do you represent?

Fabien Alfonso: “I represent the Recording Industry Association of Trinidad and Tobago (RIATT) we are a non-profit trade association representing the individuals and entities involved in the recording of all genres of music. RIATT will continue to educate the populace about the definition of a local Music industry and how it differentiates from the Carnival industry”.

Entertainment Macco: Who are you? What is your role in the entertainment industry?
Fabien Alfonso: “Really I am a record producer/activist/entertainment consultant; as a producer I have worked with Machel Montano, Destra Garcia, Bungi Garlin and Militant to name a few. I am in dialogue with a number artiste representative groups and I am also part of the Artiste Coalition of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT). Promoting the development of a local music industry is what I’m all about”

Entertainment Macco: How did you become involved in the issue at hand?
Fabien Alfonso: “As the president of RIATT, some aggrieved members of Copyright Organization of Trinidad and Tobago (COTT) asked that I be the official spokesperson for this situation. The members trust and believe that I can articulate the present state of affairs and effectively represent them.

Entertainment Macco: What do the members hope to achieve by calling this ‘special meeting’?
Fabien Alfonso: "The members want COTT to explain why the organization deducts such a high percentage rate for administration of its duties. COTT’s argument, in defence of such high percentages taken has to do with their exorbitant administrative and legal fees. The members are also requesting a breakdown of salaries and other professional fees. As it stands, if COTT is unable to give satisfactory answers, the members intend to have the existing board removed. This would be done in accordance with COTT’s statutes.

Entertainment Macco: Who/What is WIPO?
Fabien Alfonso: “World Intellectual Property Organization which is the governing body responsible for intellectual property throughout the world. They also establish international treaties that all countries are encouraged to be signatories of. The members’ arguments were based on a WIPO endorsed report written by a Dr. Ulrich Uchtenhagen in 2005. In a release, COTT claims what is being reported as ‘ false and misleading’. Anyone can Google this document and see what these guidelines are”.

Entertainment Macco: Can you enlighten us some more about the WIPO report?
Fabien Alfonso: "According to the WIPO report, a copyright collection society can only be deemed viable, if the administration fee for the management of performance and broadcasting rights remain within a reasonable range of 30%. For the year ending 2009, information at hand showed COTT deducting a lot more than this recommended rate. The amount was 60% for broadcast distribution (Radio and Television) and 78% for General distribution (bars, restaurants, gyms, hotels etc.) Income from Carnival and some Live Events are not part of COTT’s general distribution."

Entertainment Macco: Does COTT have any official documentation stating the figure they are to deduct for administration fees?
Fabien Alfonso: "COTT has a document called ‘DISTRIBUTION RULES’ that clearly states how much COTT deducts for the administration of Reproduction Rights. With reference to broadcast and public performance rights fees, there is no stated stipulation in that said document. Seeing as both fall under their purview and the one document relates to both the rights that COTT administers why isn’t there a percentage stipulated for broadcast and public performances as was done for reproduction rights?"

Entertainment Macco: Is this practice illegal?
Fabien Alfonso: “It is not illegal but may be considered to be an unethical practice. It really begs the question of viability. Was COTT created to be viable to itself or to its members? Nevertheless it was those questionable deductions that prompted the members call for a ‘special meeting’.

Entertainment Macco: Can this issue affect the group or the board negatively?
Fabien Alfonso: “Many possibilities come to mind; for this group, victimisation and being branded as trouble makers if this effort is not successful.
I’m concerned about some of the individuals that are on the current board. These are people I know and genuinely respect. My belief is members of the board were not aware of this particular issue. But if there were any that knew about it, let’s hope it does not affect them”

Entertainment Macco: What do you feel the outcome would be?
Fabien Alfonso: "COTT has to justify their operational costs. It’s a case of income minus expenses; there is also discourse about the purchase of a new building. The question is, was this necessary? Was it a priority, does it benefit the members or the organization? Does this new facility assist the organization in collecting extra money? So if answers to these questions aren’t forthcoming, the members are certain about that vote of no confidence in the existing board. They want an organization that’s about cost-effective financial management and whose main priorities are its members."

Entertainment Macco: Should this effort succeed, can you give us an idea of what new policies or strategies are proposed to be put in place?
Fabien Alfonso: "Revisit of policies “Most of COTTs current policies would be revised. Case in point, the nomination and election process of the board. There must be a reduction of excessive operational and legal costs. COTT needs to engage other Industry stakeholders to deal with Compliance issues from a collective standpoint. The collection of reproduction/mechanical rights would be exercised with aggression. Some members expressed that COTT has become sort of an elitist group and has lost touch with its grass roots members. I hope this is an allegation and not a reality. In conclusion, the members are advised to draft a document similar to a manifesto. This would contain the course of action the new board would implement should they succeed in removing the current board and gaining full control of COTT.”

Entertainment Macco: Do you think that all the artistes would come together?
Fabien Alfonso: “This is an opportunity for artistes within the entertainment fraternity to unite, exercise team work and organizational democracy. The outcome could only be positive”.

There is something that is absolutely amazing about Devyn Tyson, she is a young lady with a gigantic voice. Chatting with Devyn was a pore-raising experience and she is well on her way to becoming a superstar. Born in the United States to Trinidadian parentage, Devyn is a Trini to the Bone.
Devyn’s mother; Natasha Mason-Tyson says that every time Devyn performs she turns into someone else. Her explanation was summed up by saying, “She is not the Devyn that I know and when she comes off the stage she goes back to being my little girl. And at every performance I cry, I feel very proud of her and it is an amazing ride... I am so excited for her but it is also scary....”

Entertainment Macco: Hi Devyn, tell me something about yourself?
Devyn: “I am unique little girl, people say I have an old spirit about me and they kinda see themselves in me because I am so mature for my age. I am very humble, fun loving, a great daughter and great friend. I was born on December 28^th 2001.”

Entertainment Macco: How long have you been singing?
Devyn: “Since I was four and now I am nine...so 5 years.”

Entertainment Macco: I realize that you are quite the performer, what is it that you enjoy the most about performing?
Devyn: “I love to see all the people and the crowd...the screaming the excitement and the fact that I can do it because not many kids my age can.“

Entertainment Macco: Who are your influences?
Devyn: “I would have to say Patrice Roberts, Machel Montano and Destra Garcia.”

Entertainment Macco: Why those three?

Devyn: “Because other than talent they have great presentations and are all awesome performers. Machel has been singing since he was 8 like me. Patrice has some great songs. There are others I like but I have a connection to these three more than any other artistes...”

Entertainment Macco: Who is your favourite artiste?
Devyn: “Patrice Roberts.”
Entertainment Macco: Why is she your favourite?
Devyn: “She is very young and she has a lot of energy when she is on stage, some of her songs just amaze me.”

Entertainment Macco: Do you have a favourite Patrice song?

Devyn: “Yes definitely it is one that is called ‘Wuk it’ “

Entertainment Macco: You are so young so I have to ask you this, how easy or difficult is it for you to balance school and singing?
Devyn: “It is difficult but it is also easy because as much as I sing I know I have to study because without education you can’t do much of anything and would not reach very far in my life.”

Entertainment Macco: Are you ever scared to sing/perform for large crowds?
Devyn: “No I’m not.....I have been doing it since I was 4 and I am not scared to perform in front of anyone. When I just started I used to watch people on TV and I figured if they don’t look scared I shouldn’t be either.”

Entertainment Macco: Devyn, so many people are talking about you and your talent, how does that make you feel?
Devyn: “I feel excited and proud at the same time...on the 22/01/11 Machel was talking about me on one of his interviews and I have lots of things to do in the future.”
Entertainment Macco: Talking about you being so popular, I understand you registered for the Soca Monarch competition...How did that happen?
Devyn: “I was performing and one the people asked my mom if I could actually be a part of the competition. My mom knew I wanted to be a part and that is going to be a big step as it would help me grow and allow people to get to know me more.”

Entertainment Macco: Right...I understand

Devyn: “I also couldn’t enter Jr Soca Monarch because I don’t go to school in Trinidad...so I entered the Soca Monarch.”

Entertainment Macco: What can we expect from any of your performances?
Devyn: “I have a lot of supporters and most of them are my family...this new song that I have is called “The Islands” and it is all about the islands coming together and the unity we should have....I do always have a surprises but they are surprises that everybody has to wait for. But I plan on having tons of fun, enjoying myself and most importantly doing my best.”

Entertainment Macco: Are you scared about the thought of competing against these more established artistes (who are also like 3 or 4 times your size lol)

Devyn: “I am not scared....although they are big artistes....I am just going to have fun and do my best..I don’t even think of it as a competition....”

Entertainment Macco: Devyn, so many people are talking about you and your talent, how does that make you feel?

Entertainment Macco: Now, I understand you have a song out, (The Islands) which features Lyrikal, how did that collaboration come about?
Devyn: “I wrote the song and Ma$tamind asked Lyrikal to help with the bridge when Lyrikal was finished with the bridge it was actually his type of singing and we asked him if he would be on the song and he said yes.”

Entertainment Macco: Who produced the track?

Devyn: “Shawn Noel, the Ma$tamind.”

Entertainment Macco: Is this the first song you have ever written and can we expect more music from you?
Devyn: “It not the first one I have written but the first one I ever recorded. I have been writing since I was 6. I have multiple books with songs that I wrote but I have like 4-5 solid songs”

Entertainment Macco: What was it like to record your first song?

Devyn: “It was exciting because I never recorded a song before. I had some difficulties because I would have to get the correct key and might have been a little off but not too much pressure. It was just fun.”

Entertainment Macco: Is there anything that you are scared about, as far as your music career is concerned?
Devyn: “I am kinda scared that people would not want me to grow up because sometimes they stop liking you when you start off so young. So I have to come up with really good songs so they can keep on liking me...”

Entertainment Macco: How did you feel when you heard your song on the radio for the first time?

Devyn: “Very proud and I didn’t believe that they would actually play my song. My mother was really proud and she cried....”

Entertainment Macco: Now a lot of adults might look at you and think your parents may be forcing you to do all the things you are involved in, is this something you enjoy doing or is it forced?
Devyn: “It is something that I enjoy doing, I really really really want to do it and my parents didn’t push me into doing it. They supported and continue to support me and encourage me.”

Entertainment Macco: Tell me about your family?

Devyn: “My family is very united, we all have a wonderful relationship, we don’t have conflict, they are not too picky and they always agree on one thing. We are a pretty grounded family. I love to be around my family they are the supporters...without them I really wouldn’t be here today.”

Entertainment Macco: Does anyone else in your family sing/perform?

Devyn: “My dad used to sing, my brother sings as well as my mom. It’s in my genes and it is generational, like my grandmother and great grandmother and stuff used to sing as well.”

Entertainment Macco: What are you looking forward to the most as you continue your career?
Devyn: “I would like to do more genres and actually have my own TV show some day. It is not only Soca that I want to do, although it is part of my culture I want to explore everything....”

Entertainment Macco: I am hearing something about you planning a video, is this true?
Devyn: “It is true.......I am involved in a documentary that is in the works but the actual video for the song is not solid as yet however there will be something in the near future...”

Entertainment Macco: What’s your favourite food?

Devyn: “Chicken Nuggets...”

Entertainment Macco: What do you do when you’re not singing and performing?

Devyn: “I study a lot, I also like to read as well as write and I like to play a lot of sports”

Devyn: “I am doing wonderful in school, I am in the gifted programme in school and I have been for a very long time and I am in 4^th grade. My grades are terrific as well.”

Entertainment Macco: Is there anyone you would like to say thank you to?

The name Third Bass is quite a familiar one in the Trinidad and Tobago music scene. The DJ/Songwriter/Artiste has been around for quite some time; travelling the world while flying the soca flag high. I am sure most of us didn't know that Bass has written hit songs for the likes of Denise Belfon, Precious, Traffik, Super Blue, Singing Sandra and was also responsible for the discovery of now deceased songstress Onika Bostic and Soca diva Destra. So it was quite a privilege for us to speak with Third Bass, who was very vocal in letting Entertainment Macco know of the challenges that he now faces in the industry!

Entertainment Macco: Who is Third Bass?

Third Bass: “Third Bass is Adrian Joel Hackshaw a simple lover of music born oct 5^th 19.. lol”

Entertainment Macco: Lol....

Entertainment Macco: How long have you been involved in the entertainment industry?
Third Bass: “I professionally started radio at 98.9 FM in 1992 ... wow long time”

Entertainment Macco: For those who may be unaware, please state all the different hats you wear in the industry?

Third Bass: “DJ/Radio Announcer/Songwriter/Artiste.”

Entertainment Macco: You were living in the US for some time, what made you decide to come back home?

Third Bass: “I honestly, believe it or not came back home because I was in a long distance relationship that ended and wanted to re-unite with the woman I love.”

Entertainment Macco: *jaw drops* Ok I guess I have no choice but to believe it. ...

Entertainment Macco: Was it easier to do what you are doing in the US when compared to here in Trinidad & Tobago?

Third Bass: “While in the U.S. I did manage to do radio not only on a Caribbean level I did a great stint at NYC’s Hott 97 FM ... doing music up there was a bit frustrating though...but at the end of the day home is home.”

Entertainment Macco: Tell me about the frustration, explain...

Third Bass: “It is hard to be an artiste while based in the USA, especially if you are doing Soca...you have to be here in Trinidad to get the airplay and support. The only artiste who has really made it so far and is based overseas is Lyrikal and that took him years...”

Entertainment Macco: Are you single/in a relationship or married?

Third Bass: “Single..”

Entertainment Macco: What about children, do you have any or plans of having soon?

Third Bass: “Lots of Godkids...lol but seriously YES I would love to have kids, when god is ready for it to happen it will happen because nothing happens before it’s time.”

Entertainment Macco: I understand you are experiencing some difficulties as far as airplay is concerned, tell me a little about that?

Third Bass: “Well over the years airplay in certain quarters have been an issue all I want is a fair shot once my music is good enough...”

Entertainment Macco: Why do you feel this is happening?

Third Bass: “I have an idea, but honestly to believe one human being would be so petty and childish is beyond me..”

Entertainment Macco: Do you mind saying which radio stations refuses to play your music?

Third Bass: “96.1 FM, the P.D (programme director) actually said my music will never play there again and well the other station I won’t say they don’t play me.....certain djs do, certain djs don’t...I stop being concerned lol”

Entertainment Macco: Didn’t you use to work @ 96.1? How long ago was that?
Third Bass: “Yeah I left there in 2000.”

Entertainment Macco: So he didn’t give a reason as to why your music will not be played?

Third Bass: “There was something that I said on the radio a couple years ago about him where I made reference to him and he didn’t like it..it wasn’t anything disrespectful but it is time to get over it!”

Entertainment Macco: You were mentioned in a recent note which was written by Devon Mathews, what is up with that?

Third Bass: “Well what can I say bout Mr. Mathews...he was just expressing about the new mafia which I openly denounce.....I have no problems with new blood and talent getting into the biz but just remember the same people you step on, on your way up are the same people you gonna meet on your way back down.”

Entertainment Macco: It have a new mafia? Talk nah!

Third Bass: “If you listen to Bunji’s song “Push Out” he talked about the same thing but he didn’t call any names but there is a new mafia out there. You could probably call Devon and ask him about it. The thing is I don’t mind them having new blood in the game but just deal with the music and let it speak for itself”

Entertainment Macco: So, as a dj/artiste/songwriter, do you have issues playing the music of other dj's who are now artistes?
Third Bass: “I don’t have a problem playing good music no matter who it’s from.”

Entertainment Macco: Is it now a “do for do” scenario? (They not playing yours so you not playing theirs')
Third Bass: “Well at my station Boom 94.1 fm I am the announcer not the dj so I have little say in what plays...”

Entertainment Macco: Is this the first time, you are experiencing a "fight down" in the industry?
Third Bass: “It is not the first time ... when you dwell on the fight down thing it has you really negative and I have people who are willing to help me... I don’t like to dwell on the fight down ting, I just wanna make my music..”

Entertainment Macco: How do you plan on dealing with this?
Third Bass: “Getting back into urban radio was one way, thanks to Boom I am getting good rotation not just because I work there but because my music is good and I am also getting the opportunity to connect with the urban audience once again. Thanks also to Next 99, Soca 91.9 fm ... and CT 105 FM ... been working facebook with the videos and I launched the official video for my song “Big Tune Gyal” on 20-01-2011 which I took to “Synergy” you seen it yet lol?

Entertainment Macco: Sounds good to me, and yes we have seen the video!

Entertainment Macco: What is the most memorable experience in the industry thus far?
Third Bass: “Everyday in radio is a memorable one for me, I do what I love and I touch people, make them aware and make them laugh.....just taking a phone call and someone says “you are doing a great job” is a blessing... plus just walking down the street and someone tells me they love my music or telling me I said something that meant something to them is always unforgettable.”

Entertainment Macco: Awww Bass you’re a sentimental one? (j/k)

Entertainment Macco: You have been in the industry for quite some time, if you look back at the industry when you started off to what it is now, tell me one thing you would have liked to remain the same.
Third Bass: “Respect!!....nuff said”

Entertainment Macco: Tell me about your releases for carnival 2k11, as we speak how many songs are out?

Third Bass: “I have 5 songs out; B.T.G – “Big tune gyal” produced by Ma$tamind in NYC,“Jammin yuh” on the Hot Gal Riddim produced by Mastamike of Tuff Nutt studios,“Today is Carnival” a song dedicated to kiddies Carnival that’s on the Makalele riddim produced by the Phoenix. “By the trunk” on De Tin-Pan riddim produced by Ma$tamind again and a serious road march contender called “Ready 4 d road” produced by Mr. Neil Bernard.

Entertainment Macco: Can we expect more releases from you, (if yes) would you be willing to give us a sneek peek..
Third Bass: “Definitely after carnival, look out for music right through the year.”

Third Bass: “Directing was a combination of myself and Brian Herbert of Video Lab Productions ... he produced and edited it.”

Entertainment Macco: What do you look forward to the most, during the carnival season?

Third Bass: “The music and the women.”

Entertainment Macco: Generally what are your views on the Soca Industry?

Third Bass: “I call it a dustry not industry cause we are in dust ... It’s basically a big lucrative hustle … run in eat a food ... but it is nice to see people living well and making money in spite of.”

Entertainment Macco: Do you have any intentions of releasing an album anytime soon?

Third Bass: “All my songs will be available online soon for sale..”

Entertainment Macco: I am glad to hear this...

Entertainment Macco: Why do you think there are more successful men in the entertainment industry than women?

Third Bass: “Hmmm good question ... women need to take more charge of the thing ... yuh know what I would love to see a female music producer that would be hotttt...”

Entertainment Macco: What advice would you give to someone who is now trying to enter the industry?

Third Bass: “Pray don’t stray ... have patience ... be prepared ... listen ... take every critique with a pinch of salt ... pay attention to what the producer is doing and not doing ... and if anyone ever you to give them money to play their music make sure you record it and send it to me... third.basstnt@yahoo.com.”

Naki Is Talking In Tongues

As we get ready for 2011 Trinidad Carnival season, We at Entertainment Macco have been checking out all the new music releases and we came across a really interesting number by Nzunaki "Naki" Tuitt, is a Toronto-based talented recording artiste, and songwriter. Although she has been involved in the Entertainment Industry for some time, she remains relatively new to the Soca scene. For C2K11, Naki is featured on Ma$tamind Production's "D Tin-Pan Riddim" and she has many wondering who the sassy talent is. Entertainment Macco had the opportunity to catch up with Naki for the 2nd time and boy did we grill her....

Entertainment Macco: Describe Naki; who are you?

Naki: “I am an artiste; a writer, singer and performer. I am a spiritual being, a loving person and a warrior. I am a social worker. I am a daughter, a sister and a great friend.”

Entertainment Macco: As a female, what is a major obstacle for you have to overcome to be in the entertainment industry?

Naki: “I have to maintain a level head and ignore the unwanted advances of men when I am in music mode. Big Annoyance and huge obstacle in more ways than one!!! When I on music I wanna be on music and nothing else, leave d sh*t talk and ego for when we done record and pushing out tunes. It doesn't always work that way. People start toting feelings mixing it with the business of music and next ting yunno, song hold up.”

Entertainment Macco: Now I have been following you for a while, so I know you were into Calypso music, why the change to Soca?

Naki: “I haven't really changed or switched to Soca. I am just giving Kaiso a slight rest. It’s where I started and where I got my stage experience. I love that art form so I will never fully divorce it. But I am just investing more energy into Soca right now. It’s like my love affair.”

Entertainment Macco: Are you singing strictly Soca now, if yes, why did you make that decision?

Naki: “Well, I certainly will be focusing on Soca the most, but I am not limited to that genre. Look just 2 weeks ago I recorded a sweet reggae. Music is music, but I need to beat this iron while it’s hot, so Soca is top priority for this year and the next few.”

Entertainment Macco: You are relatively new to the industry but I still have to ask, what about the industry really grinds your nerves? What would you like to change?

Naki: “I want dj's to play good music and stop waiting for you to be their friend or in their camp to play it. I want people to be more open-minded and receptive to new ideas. Stop being bandwagonists. I want Soca ambassadors and Soca lovers to stop being so tunnel visioned. Put love over money and you will still be rich financially. It have enough for everybody to eat man. Also, to the men, take it easy on the ladies, nuh. Macco if I tell you how many times tears come to my eyes cause I wanna talk music and the other person wanna talk something else. I go home and tell my manager/friends "dat's it, ah done!!!...."

Entertainment Macco: I am hearing something about you “Talking In Tongues” (haha), what is that about? Who wrote the song?

Naki: “Talking in Tongues is epic. Any woman can relate. It’s a sexual song about a man giving you so much sweetness that you can’t even talk, words fail you, you feel like u in a different dimension. Tameka Jarivs George of Antigua wrote that song. She is so creative and I’m glad she chose me to sing it.”

Entertainment Macco: Where did the idea come? Is it that you were approached by the songwriter or you went to her with the idea?

Naki: “The way this came about was almost too good to be true. Tameka wanted a chance to write I wanted a chance to sing. My manager Natasha, made the union. She said to Tameka, "Ah want something risky and sexy for Naki". Initially we worked on another song and scrapped that idea earlier in the year. When De Tin-pan came up Tameka wrote to it in no time and sent it back to my manger. They both said "see if you like that". Initially I said NO and I’ll think about it, Because it was so 'risqué' but by the next day the "katooonkas" were stuck in my head and ah couldn't stop singing it.”

Entertainment Macco: How did you end up on De Tin-Pan riddim?
Naki: “Well again, my manager Natasha told me we have a wicked riddim, you can write something or I can get a song for you to sing on it. I loved that riddim the first couple seconds of hearing it. I would listen to it on repeat to and from work. I still wrote another song for it you know. But I couldn't resist that "stickaakaatoonka" on it. Big props to Ma$tamind who is one of the most talented and patient producers I know. He really cooks up this musical madness in minutes.”

Entertainment Macco: What has the feedback been like so far?

Naki: “So far it’s getting a nice buzz. I’m grateful because it really was a risk. But I'm happy dj's are having fun with it trying to translate the chorus. Men messaging me asking if they could "honker my horn" or make me TiT (Talk in Tongues) and women asking "Naki, is talking in tongues you say? I never get that" hahahahah. People wondering and asking so that’s good. And it’s a plus that the entire riddim is hot!”

Entertainment Macco: So hear nah, a man ever made you talk in tongues?

Naki: “Yuh putting me on blast EM, You is really a macco boy. Let’s just say ah come REALLLL close. I have a song called "Weakness" that I wrote, to drop later on in the year and that will tell you what does make me TiT. lol.”

Entertainment Macco: Is it fair to assume that you have a man in your life? If yes, what do you look for in a man, if no; what are you looking for?

Naki: “Girl, you should’ve asked me what my most elusive goal is. I'd say a good man. I am surely interested in someone but I am officially single because a lot of men fear commitment and I refuse to lower my standards. I’m good enough to be one man's Queen, alone and I won’t share my throne. All I want is commitment. Spirituality and Intelligence, Honesty and Respect are a must. He should be ambitious and must have some swag going on yes and it would be a definite plus if they are into music.”

Entertainment Macco: What does sexy mean to you?

Naki: “Sexy is an Energy, An attitude, An Aura, ah Vibe…yuh get the drift right? It’s how you present. You can be in a 'pom pom' shorts and belly top and still not be sexy, you can be thrashy..…someone else can come and pull of the same 'sexy' you were aiming for in that same outfit because they give off a different energy. It has to do with confidence and the intent behind your dress, speech, walk and attitude. You can’t come across as force ripe or trying too hard.”

Entertainment Macco: Talking about sexy, I maccoed a picture on your facebook fanpage that is quite sexy; with your back is naked, are you concerned about how you would be perceived by others when they look at that picture or worried about a backlash?

Naki: “Well I’m glad you find it sexy and not thrashy. No and No. The people that care about me do though. They warned me "Naki, not this one, take it down". But I’m a stubborn Taurus. The words of the song TiT, if you listen are ten times sexier than the image of a naked back. Also I am of age. I am singing a very sexy song so I didn’t see the need to come out in a full linen suit like when I'm singing my kaiso. The message is different, the audience is different. If I get a backlash for that then I can take the heat. People will talk regardless, even if I put on a hijab.”

Entertainment Macco: What message are you trying to send with the picture?

Naki: “Honestly, I'm not trying to SEND ANY message with the picture. The message is in the music. I am just being me..when I am a hard back 40 or 50 yr old woman with child you won’t be seeing my naked back….but right now that’s just one tiny aspect of my persona. If there is any message at all it’s BE YOURSELF!! Don't fake da funk.”

Entertainment Macco: Since your back outside, I had time to notice a tattoo, also the last time we met up I saw a few as well (grins), Tell me about them, do you ink for fun or are they meaningful? (share them)

Naki: “hmmm Macco again. lol. …I don't ink for fun…haha….it stings you know. lol. But every tattoo that I got I thought about it for at least 6mths-a yr before getting it. My first tattoo on my back I got on my 20th birthday, it’s an ankh with a dove resting on it; it represents femininity, eternity and peace: Peace Eternally. The next is a small black panther on my ankle it represents strength, resilience and mystery. Lawd so many.”

Entertainment Macco: Haha....

Naki: “I have a music note behind my ear, that represents the love for the music that’s always in my head. I have "Love Life" on my wrists. My full name Nzunaki means "God's gift is Greatest" and I believe His greatest gifts are Love and life. Almost there, I got one of my favourite bible verses "When I fall I shall Rise, When I sit in Darkness the Lord shall be my light" on my inner left arm; that's self explanatory.”

Entertainment Macco: Some deep stuff....

Naki: “The Last one I got on Dec31st 2010 on my shoulder says "Perfectly Imperfect" and it’s about self love and embracing your perfect-self amidst your imperfections. They are all mostly in discreet places. One more and I’m done!! My dad will kill me. lol.”

Entertainment Macco: Now is a really good time to worry about your dad...lol

Entertainment Macco: Growing up in the Caribbean most people don’t talk about sexuality; it is still quite taboo, however this song is really direct. Is it safe to say that you are very direct and open about your sexuality..Are you worried how you would be perceived?

Naki: “I’m quite shy behind closed doors when it comes to sex and sexuality you know. But I like to live vicariously through my music. I'm direct and open about life, sexuality included. I’m not afraid to speak/sing my mind nor am I that worried about perception because I don't do or say anything that I can’t backup or stand behind. People will always talk.”

Entertainment Macco: What is the one thing you want to be recognized for in the industry?
Naki: “Ah know you said one. But I have TWO. Versatility as an artiste and Being a great ambassador for our culture!!”

Entertainment Macco: What do you think sets you apart from other females in the industry?
Naki: “I have much respect for all my female counterparts in the industry and I believe they are all unique in there own way and I do not compare myself. I am not scared to try new things I am not scared to mash people's corns because I don't depend on soca to eat or pay my bills.”

Entertainment Macco: So you are not a full-time artiste? What industry are you employed in?
Naki: “Currently I am not. I wouldn't mind it though. I am also a social worker. I currently work with youths 13-25years at a youth drop-in centre/group home. I deal with at risk youths, homelessness, addictions, mental health, abuse, employment etc and I really love my job. If I had all the money in the world I'd still be doing music and social work.”

Entertainment Macco: Wow.....talented, ambitious and career driven

Entertainment Macco: Can we expect more music from you for the season?
Naki: “Which season? Dry season, or wet season? (joking) My producer said the other day "There is life after Carnival"…so there will be no more songs for the TRINI carnival season, but Yes definitely, I have a couple things waiting to drop when the bacchanal subsides. I don't want to be an artiste just releasing tracks for Carnival. This year I'm gonna be turning it up a notch and raining songs on them.”

Entertainment Macco: Are you having difficulties as far as airplay is concerned?

Naki: “Yesssssss and no, But I am not one to gripe though. I believe if you stay positive, persistent and consistent and yuh good…eventually they have no choice but to play the music. As a foreign based artiste, it’s a challenge getting airplay "home". Out here you have to do the ground work to make yourself and your product visible. This song Talking in Tongues is getting some good buzz so next tune, I hope not as many people should be asking "Who is this Naki?"

Entertainment Macco: What is your most proud/cherished memory/moment?

Naki: “There isn't ONE, that I can pick. At every phase of my journey in life there have been hallmarks that I cherish immensely. Passing all my cxc and A-Levels was one, succeeding in Kaiso another, Getting my Degree another, writing, recording and performing my own music another, buying meh car, a next..lol……there are too many and to herald one over the other would b unfair…yunno”

Entertainment Macco: What about regrets, do you have any?

Naki: “I was gonna say a profound Yessss but I would have to explain and that guy would know is he ah talking bout so NO….The Mistakes I make aren't really mistakes they are opportunities for growth and learning and strengthening my character, so naahh…Whatever happened, happened for a reason. No Regrets.”

Entertainment Macco: Haha @ that guy will know!

Entertainment Macco: Is there anything, if given the opportunity you would change about yourself?

Naki: “Yes, I'd work on my hastiness, my hot mouth and my spending habits, somebody say shopaholic.”

Entertainment Macco: If you could work with one artiste; Caribbean based or otherwise, who would it be and why?
Naki: “You asking answers man. Machel is the first. I don't care if it is when he is in a rocking chair he has to come say "Huuuy" on my track but I value and admire than man's persistence, dedication, work ethic and passion. He is a true true Artiste. Next I wouldn't mind sharing the stage with artistes like Lauryn Hill and Pink, they are so free. In the Caribbean?? Black Stalin, Kartel, JahBami, Lil Rick, Lyrikal, and Destra, these are energetic and talented people but you said ONE right? Lol”

Entertainment Macco: Why do you think there are more successful men in the entertainment industry than women?

Naki: “Because they say "this is a man's world" so when we women try getting in we are expected to do all kinds of things outside our character to gain access and to succeed. Women have to sacrifice more than men but we coming up man.”

Entertainment Macco: Honestly, what is your opinion on the Soca industry; how do u feel about it?

Naki: “I love Soca so ah cant bad talk it, but sometimes it’s frustrating to see good good music go to waste because of the ego's and money hungry ways involved in this business. Mainly ego's and petty fame, that’s what holding us back, especially TRINI Soca. Unity in the music is all Soca needs and we gone clear. Also were missing some creativity, i.e stuck on d jump and wave but I see this year a good amount of people pushing the boundaries and “we ting” sounding good. The art form is evolving nicely man.”

What does Christmas mean to you?

Christmas is such a special time....A time for reflection, love and merriment.... It reminds us of the love that Jesus Christ has for us and that it should be reciprocated at all times...

Entertainment Macco caught up with a few familiar faces during this hectic season just to find out what Christmas means to them...... This is what they had to say...

Chrystal "Buffy" Cuffy: "For me Christmas is about appreciating God the father giving him thanks for all that he has done for us throughout the year celebrating his birth and giving to those in need. Also it's about family togetherness"

Shawn "Ma$tamind" Noel:

Some may think I see it as merely a time to drink,

("What Is Christmas Without Ah Rum?" LOL), but nah.

It's not that because I don't need an excuse to drink...

(because "If yuh drink rum yuh will die. If yuh doh drink rum yuh will die. Yuh might as well....")

Hahaha.

Seriously though, Christmas for me is a time to celebrate the birth of our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ.

It's also a time to spend with friends & family,

giving of yourself and sharing love with everyone.

And you can't forget parang! As a matter of fact I love it so much,

I'll be starting to record parang in May or June next year, please God."

Biggie Irie: "To me Christmas is a time really for
Love, Peace and Tranquility...
A time when you
reflect on your life, giving thanx to GOD
for allowing you to live thru' a whole year
to see another Xmas.
To me it's about real friendship with loved ones,
those who have been there with you for the
past year and you know they will be
there to support you in the coming years ahead.
And finally it's about making merry with
loved ones and close friends, drinking
and eating traditional Xmas food.

Here in Bim our Xmas delicacy is Jug Jug
which consist of peas, guinea corn and all
sorts of meats all cooked together like coucou...
I make sure I cook that every year because
it reminds me of my mom and aunt
who have passed on, so cooking jug jug
is like a tribute to them because they cooked it every year. Sorrel is also a must for me. I'm not too big on the alcohol or the gift giving
so I look forward to preparing the food
and spending time with my true friends."

Mista Spine:"Christmas is a special time for me because it is that time of the year when I can see all my family from all over the place because they always come to my house to chill and cook all the food yuh could eat lol. I also like Christmas because of the spirit /vibe that is in the air around that time..."

Rolhensha: "Christmas is a gentle reminder to show love and appreciation to everyone I meet, from a family member to a complete stranger... Because the greatest act of love was made for every human being when Christ sent his only son to earth."

Christmas Day is quickly approaching and amongst all the hustle and bustle West Indians always look forward to the musical offerings for the season. Nicholas St. Bernard; a music enthusiast, fellow West Indian and EM supporter shared this special piece with us, which we just couldn't resist reproducing (with his approval of course). Who ruled the airwaves and the dancehalls with their Christmas offerings through the years?

Well there was Crazy, Francine Edwards, Scrunter, Marcia Miranda, Baron & Kenny J., with their ParangSoca selections (I DON'T say soca Parang, okay?...)
I'd like to state here, however, for the past 5 Christmas seasons, SOME of the best Christmas offerings have come from the Ma$tamind camp!!! MY opinion of course! Check this out...
2006: Black Cake And Sorrel - Da $pirit$
This is a certified Trini Christmas classic, as let's say, Lennox Gray's "Around My Christmas Tree," &; Hazel Ramberansingh's "The Cherry Tree Carol." Man EVERY Christmas season since then, this jam enjoys a lot of airplay, whether on the radio, on the street, EVERYWHERE!!! Some radio broadcasters even use the piece as background music, when taking calls on air from listeners.
By the way, it's just one brother, namely Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel, in his guise as Da $pirit$, who plays ALL the instruments on this jam! Yea, he's a multi-instrumentalist like Stevie Wonder, Prince Rogers Nelson, R. Kelly &; Timbaland...Oh, and I hear he makes an "award-winning" macaroni pie too!...!

Shawn is the current PARANG MA$TA (!!!), and he has held that title for the past 5 years, iz just NOBODY sayin' so, or recognize that!!! MY opinion of course...Yea, I know he produces BOTH PARANG & PARANGSOCA, which is under the umbrella of PARANG, so let's once again refer to him as the undefeated ALL-ROUND PARANG MA$TA, 2006 to 2010!!!

The 27 year-old brother got PARANG in his blood! As for reigning PARANGSOCA champ, no doubt, it's Marcia Miranda! She's also consistent like Shawn...
Man when you see they havin' shows in the Christmas season, featuring PARANG or PARANGSOCA icons, Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel should be one of the performers on it! Only thing he wouldn't be able to multi-task, playing all the instruments, as on his top instrumental recordings. Saw Harold Faltermeyer do that on "Solid Gold" with a number of keyboards, back in the day, as he played "Axel F," which was the theme from the "Beverly Hills Cop" motion-picture...Harold could have done that though, as the music in "Axel F" was just synthesizers...

Never mind, Shawn could get a few of his musician friends to take the stage with him, and I can just hear people in the audience..."iz he who play that!"...Yea, one day...
Now EVERYBODY knows about Timbaland, the producer, and as an artiste, when he drops an album featuring some of the top vocalists around. How come after all this time, it's only when Shawn SINGS ("De Tail Gone," "Rum & Roti" etc.) that his name is mentioned?!


Shawn "Ma$tamind" Noel

I think every now and again, when playing any of the above Parang instrumentals by Da $pirit$ on radio, broadcasters should inform listeners that's it's actually one brother, that is Shawn "Da Ma$tamind" Noel playing all the instruments on the track. MOST everybody knows, and talks about producers Quincy Jones &; Timbaland, and our own Pelham Goddard's work on quite a number of winning Road March tunes, and his recognizable keyboard playing through the years on various artistes' tracks. Ma$tamind has to be recognized in a big way like those guys above! It's called being a household name!
As I go, one day soon, I want to hear the youth say "Ma$tamind produce THIS" or "Ma$tamind produce THAT" not only with his Christmas productions, but anything he put his hands on... blaze de fire, show me yuh lighter, tonite ....!...
